Yomise-dori Shopping Street is a traditional downtown street stretching approximately 400 meters through Yanaka, Taito, Tokyo. The name "Yomise" is said to derive from the Edo-period "yomise" (night stalls), when vendor stalls lined the street with great liveliness every evening. Today, the street preserves its old-town atmosphere while being home to a diverse range of shops deeply rooted in the local community.
What is Yanesen?
"Yanesen" is the collective name for three neighborhoods: Yanaka (谷中), Nezu (根津), and Sendagi (千駄木). As one of the few areas in central Tokyo where pre-war streetscapes and culture are well preserved, it attracts many visitors from Japan and abroad.
Yanaka
Rich in temples and shrines dating back to the Edo period, Yanaka retains the charm of old Tokyo. The area is dotted with unique shops including cat-themed gift stores, traditional public bathhouses, and handmade Japanese sweets shops.
Nezu
A town developed around Nezu Shrine, Nezu features alleyways that retain an Edo-period atmosphere and old folk house cafés. Every spring, the "Bunkyo Azalea Festival" draws large crowds.
Sendagi
Known as the former residence of literary giants such as Mori Ogai and Natsume Soseki, Sendagi is a culturally rich neighborhood. As a passageway connecting Yanaka Ginza and Yomise-dori, it sees many visitors throughout the day.
